Over the next two to three years, the Scandinavian automaker will launch the production of cars with economical and environmentally friendly small engines.
Volvo engineers will begin designing 3-cylinder units after completing work on the creation of the new Drive-E family of engines that the Scandinavians plan to equip the S60, V60, XC60, XC90 and S80. According to insider information, engines with turbocharging technology of up to 1.5 liters and a capacity of no more than 225 hp will make up the line of 3-cylinder units. The new "engines", which will be more economical and environmentally friendly engines of the Drive-E family, will be paired with both manual and automatic transmissions, writes Indianautosblog about American cars.
Volvo is going to complete the small-capacity power plants with the S40, V40, S60, V60 and the new C-class car, whose premiere is scheduled for 2015. Volvo, together with Geely, is designing a C-class car on a completely new modular platform, which will allow companies to significantly reduce the time of designing and testing future models, as well as the cost of their production. On this platform, which is inferior in size to the "trolley" Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), the Scandinavian automaker, along with the five-door competitor Audi A3 and BMW 1-series, plans to create a small urban crossover in the future to compete with the BMW X1.
