The Portuguese Defense Ministry put up for sale about 60 military facilities and castles in order to cover the cost of maintaining the army

The Portuguese Defense Ministry put up for sale about 60 military facilities and castles in order to cover the cost of maintaining the army. Barracks, fortresses, airfields and hospitals are offered for sale or rent. The list of objects is not yet final and can be added. So far there are about a dozen barracks and fortresses, as well as three military hospitals in Lisbon.
With the proceeds, the state intends to finance the modernization of its military infrastructure. In total, the auction will be sold real estate for approximately 172 million euros. Of these, 32 million is planned to receive from buyers, and the remaining money must be paid at 20 million annually for seven years. All these figures are spelled out in the draft law submitted in early January to the country's parliament.
Note that among the objects of sales there are monuments of history and architecture. For example, investors can purchase castles buildings of the castle Castelo do Queijo (Cheese Castle), which was built in the 17th century. It was named after the mountain next to it. In a place where there is a castle, the Douro River flows into the ocean, and the building itself stands on top of a cliff. From there, an amazing view of the surroundings of the city.

Recall that Portugal received from the EU and the IMF financial assistance in the amount of almost 78 billion euros. The country is regaining access to capital markets for self-refinancing of public debt, but is still in austerity. Salaries of civil servants, their pensions and subsidies to family members of state and military personnel were reduced.
And the current massive sale of military real estate is taking place in the country as part of the army restructuring program. In late January, the Portuguese government announced another reduction in the number of troops - this time by 10%. Thus, the number of army will be only 31,560 people.
